What a cooking class costs

Six hours of market, garden and wok for less than a hotel dinner back home. Cooking classes in Chiang Mai are cheap by any standard. The gaps between them come from the drive, the group size and what the school leaves off the bill.

Chiang Mai has dozens of cooking schools, and the competition keeps prices low. On Viator in November 2026, a half-day class with hotel pickup, a market stop, every ingredient and a recipe book costs between $12 and $42 per person. A whole day on a farm costs $36. A small home class costs $51.

Here is what each price buys, what it leaves out, how a half day compares with a full one, and when booking with the school itself makes sense.

The quick answer

Expect $27 to $42 per person for a half-day class on Viator in 2026, with hotel pickup, ingredients and a recipe book in the price. The Siam Garden class is the cheapest at $12, the full day at Smile Organic Farm costs $36, and Benny’s home class costs $51 with no refund if you cancel. Beer and soft drinks, tips and pickup outside the zone are extra.

What is included in the price?

Hotel pickup inside a set zone, every ingredient, your own station, water or tea, the meal you cook and a recipe book. Little else.

  • Pickup: included at every school here, within 3 km of the Old City at Smile and Thai Akha Kitchen, within 3 km of Kad Kom Market at Yummy Tasty, within 5 km of the centre at Grandma’s Home.
  • Ingredients and equipment: washed, chopped and portioned before you arrive. A Smile guest in August 2026 said "everything is basically pre portioned so it’s hard to go wrong".
  • Drinks: tea, coffee and water at Siam Garden and The Rice Barn, Akha hill tribe coffee at Thai Akha Kitchen, bottled water and snacks at Yummy Tasty, and a welcome drink of Thai milk tea, lemon tea or butterfly pea tea at Grandma’s Home.
  • The recipe book: an e-book at Smile, a full-colour cookbook at Thai Akha Kitchen, an online book at Siam Garden and Yummy Tasty, a digital one at Grandma’s Home.
  • Photos: Smile posts an album on Facebook, Siam Garden and Yummy Tasty post online galleries.

The Smile listing says the half day cooks five dishes. That is lunch, plus leftovers you will not finish.

What costs extra on a cooking class?

Beer and soft drinks, tips, and pickup if your hotel sits outside the zone. Budget a little cash in baht.

  • Alcohol: sold at Thai Akha Kitchen, The Rice Barn, Grandma’s Home and Benny’s, never in the price. A Siam Garden guest in February 2026 wished they had been able to buy beer with the evening meal.
  • Tips: not included anywhere. Siam Garden and Benny’s list gratuities as extra. 50 to 100 baht for the teacher is kind and never expected.
  • Pickup outside the zone: Grandma’s Home charges extra or asks you to meet at the market. Siam Garden covers the Old Town but not the airport, and hotels near Nimmanhaemin Road have to arrange a pickup point first.
  • Market snacks and souvenirs: a bag of curry paste or dried chillies to take home. A Rice Barn guest in January 2026 wrote: "Bring baht in cash for a few extra things!"
  • Non-cooking guests: Siam Garden charges a visitor fee for anyone who comes along without cooking, including children under 6.

Is a full-day cooking class worth the extra?

For keen cooks, yes. The Smile full day costs $36 against $27 for the half day and roughly doubles the menu.

The full day at Smile Organic Farm lists ten dishes: spring rolls, papaya salad, pad thai, cashew chicken, green curry, massaman, khao soi, tom yum, tom kha kai and mango sticky rice. The half day picks five from a similar list. Pickup is 8 to 8:30 am and the day runs about eight hours.

For most people a half day is enough food and enough standing at a burner. Pick the full day if you cook at home and want the pastes and soups you skipped, or if your plan for the afternoon was going to be a pool chair anyway.

Why is Siam Garden so cheap?

Scale and distance. At $12 it runs big classes with many helpers at a garden close to an hour from the Old City.

The listing is honest about it: "Our class is located outside the city and may not be suitable for people who don’t like long drives." A guest in August 2026 described "the nearly hour ride from old center city Chiang mai" in a converted pickup truck with side benches, and suggested travel sickness tablets.

What you get for the money is a lot: six dishes of your own choosing, a curry paste in your own mortar, an air-conditioned dining room and the right to take leftovers away. A guest in June 2026 wrote that "we each got to choose six plus a curry". Another, in February 2026, found the group big and "a little regimented". Fair trade at this price.

Bigger classes mean a bigger crowd at the market stop, with the teacher talking over the traffic.

Is it cheaper to book directly with the school?

Sometimes, by a little. Schools sell in baht on their own sites, and policies differ. Compare both on the day you book.

Every school here takes direct bookings, and their own prices are quoted in baht, often paid at pickup. On Viator you pay in your own currency up front, get instant confirmation at most schools and, except at Benny’s, Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Benny’s confirms within 48 hours.

The direct route can cost a few dollars less once the exchange rate is applied. Check what happens if you cancel, because a school’s own terms may be stricter than Viator’s. Whatever route you choose, send your hotel name and address the day you book: one Siam Garden guest in February 2026 entered their hotel months ahead and only heard a few days before that pickup there was not possible.

Can you cancel and get your money back?

On every class here except Benny’s, yes, up to 24 hours before. Benny’s ($51) is non-refundable on Viator.

The Viator listing for Benny’s Home Cooking says the booking "is non-refundable and cannot be changed for any reason". It is a lovely small class run in a home kitchen, and guests rave about it, but only book it once your dates are fixed. All the other classes on this site cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead, which matters in the smoky months of February to April and in rainy season.
