Chiang Mai's best cooking schools

Almost every cooking school in Chiang Mai scores five stars. That makes the ratings useless for choosing. What does separate them is where the kitchen sits, how long the van takes to get there and how many people share the room.

Search for a cooking class in Chiang Mai and you get a wall of five-star listings with photos of open-air kitchens and rice fields. Most of those kitchens are not in Chiang Mai at all, but in the farmland around it, and the school bus picks you up first.

Below: which class we would book for which kind of trip, where each school really is, how the groups and stations compare, and what guests complain about once the glow wears off.

The quick answer

For a first class, Smile Organic Farm ($27) is the safe pick: 5.0 from 21,064 reviews, a market stop, a farm garden and five dishes. To stay in town, Thai Akha Kitchen ($42) is a five-minute walk from Chiang Mai Gate and adds three Akha hill tribe dishes. Families should look at Grandma’s Home ($36), with hens and rice fields, and budget travellers at Siam Garden ($12).

Farm, city or home kitchen: which should you pick?

A farm if the garden matters to you, the city if your time is short, a home kitchen if you want a small group and lots of questions.

Farm schools give you the morning market, a walk through beds of lemongrass and holy basil, and an open-air kitchen with a view. You pay for it in van time, often an hour or more of the day.

City schools such as Thai Akha Kitchen and Yummy Tasty skip the countryside. In return you get back a couple of hours, and Thai Akha Kitchen lets you walk in. A city garden is still a garden; it just has neighbours.

Home classes are smaller and chattier. At Benny’s Home Cooking ($51) guests report groups of four to eight. It is the priciest class here and non-refundable on Viator, so only book it with fixed dates.

How far out are the farm cooking schools?

Fifteen minutes to an hour from the Old City, before the van collects everyone else. Only the city schools are truly in Chiang Mai.

Times below come from the schools’ listings and from guests. Add the pickup loop, which can take 30 minutes on a full van, and a 20 to 30 minute market stop on most morning classes.

How do the schools compare on group size and stations?

One burner and one wok per person at nearly every school. Group sizes run from two at Yummy Tasty on a quiet day to large classes at Siam Garden.

Smile caps each class at twelve and splits bigger days into teams. Thai Akha Kitchen and Grandma’s Home give everyone their own station. Siam Garden runs larger classes with many helpers: one guest in February 2026 found the class "too big", another the same month said there were "a lot of teachers as well what makes it very comfortable for everyone".

Small schools can end up private. A Yummy Tasty guest in November 2025 wrote: "Our class was just the two of us that day". Benny’s guests report four to eight. If you want a small group, book a weekday outside December and January.

Is the most reviewed class the best one?

It is the safest. Smile’s 21,064 reviews show a school that runs like clockwork, not one that cooks better food than the rest.

Ratings here sit between 4.9 and 5.0, so the stars tell you little. Review counts tell you about volume. A big school has the vans, the staff and the routine to make the day smooth, and its teachers have answered every question many times over.

Smaller schools trade that polish for attention. Grandma’s Home, with 171 reviews on its morning class, gets warm write-ups about named teachers and the hens. Pick volume if you want reliability, a small school if you want a host.

What do guests complain about?

Pickups and heat, mostly. Long or confusing pickup windows, waits for other vans, and open kitchens on hot days.

  • Pickup windows: a Grandma’s Home guest in January 2026 said only the ticket showed the 8:30 to 9 am range, "so many people (ourselves included) were not ready".
  • Waiting for other groups: another, in March 2026, waited "~20 minutes for another group" at the market when a big class was split over several vans.
  • Heat: a Thai Akha Kitchen guest in June 2026 found the kitchen "without air conditioning and oppressively hot". Siam Garden has an air-conditioned dining room.
  • The ride: Siam Garden’s converted pickup trucks have side benches; one guest suggested travel sickness tablets.

None of this is a reason to skip a school. All of it is a reason to be in the lobby at the start of the window and to book the cooler months if you can.

Is there an upper age limit?

On some listings, yes. The Viator age bands stop at 65 for Benny’s, 70 at The Rice Barn, 75 at Smile and 80 at Grandma’s morning class.

These are booking bands rather than fitness tests, but they reflect long days on your feet, low benches and a van ride. Siam Garden, Thai Akha Kitchen and Yummy Tasty list no upper limit. If someone in your party is older or slower on stairs, message the school before you book and ask about seating and the walk from the van.
